The One Big Swim Challenges

A choice of distances to suit your ability

0.5 Mile

The half-mile event is a fantastic introduction to open water swimming.



1 Mile

The 1-mile challenge is designed for swimmers of all abilities and experience.



2 Mile

The 2-mile challenge is designed for swimmers with open water experience.



The OBS 5k

The 5k swim is a challenge for experienced open water swimmers.



Team Relay

Team of four swimmers to swim a total of 2 miles.  Each swimmer to swim 800 metres (0.5 miles).


Event Location

Parc Bryn Bach is set in 340 acres of idyllic grass and woodland and our event is being held on a stunning 36-acre lake at the heart of the venue. The lake is in a fantastic location that welcomes family and friends to support the swimmers as they swim the lake.

Parc Bryn Bach is located just off the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road.
Visitors should follow signs for Tredegar and once you’re off the A465 just follow the brown tourism signs for Parc Bryn Bach.

Event Information

Online entries

The online entries will close two weeks prior to the event. All entrants must be 18 years of age or older on the day of the event.  There will be a maximum amount of swimmers for each event and once the maximum is reached, One Big Swim will operate a waiting list system.

The One Big Swim 5k – £55
The One Big Swim Team Relay – £120 per team of 4

Water Safety

The One Big Swim team operate events where the safety of the swimmers is paramount.  Each of our events are closely monitored by both our water safety and land-based management teams.  If the safety management believes that a swimmer is struggling with the swim due to fatigue the swimmer will be retired from the event.

Equipment to be Used

Swim Caps
Please note that the swim caps provided by One Big Swim must be worn during the event as each swim cap is uniquely numbered for each swimmer.

Wetsuits are compulsory for all entrants

Highly recommended!

Tow Float
These are not mandatory, however, you are more than welcome to use a tow float.

Equipment not to be Used

Flotation devices
Pull Buoys
Hand Paddles
Headphones or any other device deemed to potentially cause harm to the swimmer or their fellow swimmers


The registration for the event will take place in the Lakeside Coffee Shop on Saturday 18th August between 2pm and 7pm. There will also be the opportunity to register on the day of the event, however, we recommend that you register on Saturday to avoid the queue (and take the opportunity to grab a quick drink and some food). During the registration process, each swimmer will be issued with a timing chip and swim cap.

Event safety briefing

There will be a safety briefing prior to each swim distance that all swimmers must attend.  The safety briefing provides information relating to each challenge and offers the opportunity for the swimmers to direct any questions to the One Big Swim team.

Bag Storage

There will limited storage for bags at each event.  Please do not leave any items of value in your bags as the One Big Swim team cannot take responsibility for any losses.

11:30 – One Big Swim 5k safety briefing
12:00 – One Big Swim 5k swim start
14:00 – One Big Swim Team Relay safety briefing

During the event swimmers and spectators will have the opportunity to visit the swim village alongside the venue where local and national retailers will be displaying their many products.
